When Hope is Lost

“But You, O Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the One who lifts my head high.”
—Psalm 3:3

The story of Tamar in 2 Samuel 13 is one of deep pain. Tamar was a princess, the daughter of King David. She was beautiful, valued, and had a bright future. Yet in one tragic moment, all of that seemed stolen. She was violated, silenced, and cast aside. Her father did not act, and her brother told her to keep quiet. Tamar lived the rest of her life in desolation.

Her story reflects what many of us feel at times. Maybe you haven’t faced Tamar’s exact situation, but life has a way of “violating” us through betrayal, loss, disappointment, or shame. Sometimes we feel robbed of joy, dignity, or hope.

But here’s the good news: We are not left without a Redeemer. Jesus is our Kinsman Redeemer; the One who steps in to rescue, restore, and defend us. He does not cast us aside. He does not leave us in shame. He lifts our heads when we can no longer lift them ourselves.

God promises that He will restore us:

“I will restore to you the years the locust has eaten.” – Joel 2:25

“Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion.” – Isaiah 61:7

No matter how hopeless things seem, Jesus Christ can give beauty for ashes, joy for mourning, and hope for despair.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I bring to You the broken places of my life; those moments where hope feels lost. Thank You for being my Kinsman Redeemer, for lifting my head, and for promising to restore me. Take away my shame, heal my heart, and fill me again with Your hope. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.

Reflection

Where in your life do you feel robbed or cast aside? Have you given that pain to Jesus, your Redeemer? What would it look like to trust Him to restore hope in that area?
